Radio show Portrait Anahita Abbasi

September 13, 2020 - March 13, 2021

... This organic phsyicality of sound that is so potent in the music of Anahita Abbasi is something that I think you can also take with you into other music to. Just try it. Listen to music not only for what the melodies do, or how the harmonies form, or what rhythms and pulses carry the music forward, but rather to the timbres you hear, the textures you feel, the colours you see. They will be there, and sometimes a lot more vibrant and interesting than you have noticed before. It seems counter-intuitive to suggest that we need to be reminded of the centrality of sound to music. After all, we all surely know that without sound we wouldn't have music at all. But it might be because of this very centrality that the nature of sound, and the shapes it forms and the ways it grows and moves, is so easily overlooked. We just assume it's there and so listen instead for what else is in the music.I think maybe the music of Anahita Abbasi draws our attention to something we need to be reminded of in many contexts: that sometimes the most important and interesting relationships we can form and be changed by are those we form with what we have always had, and have taken for granted, missing all the richness and vitality it has to offer us.
